www.manchestermusic.co.uk 15 December 2003 BEING 747 - FUN & GAMES Being 747 are based out of Leeds’s biggest and best independent label, Wrath Records. Fronted by Dave Cooke, the band also benefits from the membership of the Morricone brothers (donated by The Scaramanga Six). “Use Your Friends” is a favourite from a previous EP/Demo release, losing none of its bitter charm and sweet melodics. Something that sums up B747 with their jarring, dark semi-comedic slant on addictive pulsating power pop/rock. “Make Things Happen” mixes the off the wall vocals of Edwyn Collins with the shuffling guitar churns of an early Smiths. Many of the tracks on the first part of the album possess more of a lounge feel and as such rely on the slow burning, tongue in cheek qualities of the singer and the moody night shifts of organ and guitar . “I Move Too Fast” takes on the mantle of rock and roll with a 60’s sci-fi vibe and chews it out and spits it out quite ably. “Advice From The Golden Couple” is more ambitious as is “The Girl Who Fell Asleep Whilst Watching Her Life Flash Before Her Eyes”. Which is perhaps Being 747’s high spot. Also included on the album is the track “Weathergirl” with accompanying video, which is an excellent, shimmering slice of emotional pop, with some great images. A collection of contrasting styles, with maybe too many slow sections, but Being 747 have captured some entertaining ideas that somehow turn a bitter and twisted cabaret sound into a demonic, punk influenced and sometimes, irreverent noise. Schizoid rock and roll – now what’s wrong with that ? MMMM |
